The great masterpiece of the Compagnons passants Charpentiers du Devoir of the city of Tours was built in 1853. The Companions of the day referred to this kind of masterpiece as a “baldaquin” or “volume”. A collective effort, it was the pride of the Tours cayenne (headquarters) and was paraded through the streets of the city during the procession marking the feast of Saint Joseph (19 March). Such great masterpieces present its makers with all the difficulties to be met with in designing the work and assembling its wooden components.
