All in leather

Objectives : Discovery of leatherworking, from the tannery to the finished articles produced by shoemakers, fine leatherworkers and saddlers. Through handling leather itself, the children discover the texture and smell specific to these processed animal skins.

Procedure : In the company of a workshop leader, the children pay a visit to the part of the museum most appropriate to the workshop’s theme. With the help of models, they are then told how tanners set about transforming raw skins into leather. The session ends with production of a small item of fine leatherwork – a purse. The children go back to school with their creation.

Duration of visit and workshop : 2 hours
